Empowering Tech for Positive Change

At Code for the Community, we harness technology for global community impact, fostering collaboration between nonprofits, skilled mentors, and aspiring interns.

Grow Your Vision

Inspired by a transformative collaboration with United2Heal, we began our journey in 2018 by developing a simple mobile app that streamlined the sorting of medical supplies for communities in need. What started as a small volunteer effort quickly revealed how thoughtfully built technology could unlock real-world impact for mission-driven organizations.

In 2023, we took a step further by formally launching Code for the Community (CFTC) as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to building custom software solutions for nonprofits through structured internship cohorts. This model was designed to give aspiring technologists hands-on experience creating production-ready applications while working directly with real partners and real users. Our commitment to mentorship and practical learning has led to meaningful outcomes, with program alumni crediting their time at CFTC as a key factor in launching their careers. Many have gone on to work at leading technology companies such as Meta, Microsoft, Accenture, and T-Mobile.

In 2024, a CFTC intern cohort built and launched the ROMO app, a mobile platform that helps unhoused individuals in San Francisco access critical resources including shelters, food banks, and health clinics. By centralizing essential information into an easy-to-use experience, ROMO made vital services more accessible to those who need them most.

Building on this momentum, our Summer 2025 cohort partnered with the Middle East Children’s Alliance (MECA), a global humanitarian organization supporting communities in Gaza and across the Middle East. Interns designed and developed the MECA Community App, a platform focused on amplifying stories from the ground, organizing community events, supporting grassroots fundraising, and enabling ethical commerce through integrations like ShopPalestine. This project reflects CFTC’s growing ability to support organizations operating at an international scale while remaining deeply rooted in community impact.

We believe the impact of Code for the Community extends far beyond the products we build. By empowering interns and mentors to lead with purpose, we create a ripple effect that strengthens nonprofits, inspires innovation, and uplifts communities around the world. Together, we are cultivating a new generation of technologists who use their skills to drive lasting, positive change.
